The Vision & Aesthetic
Glossy magazine editorial was the visual direction for Sylena and Hector’s Downtown Houston engagement photoshoot. While the couple was the primary subject, the aesthetic was specifically about illustrating kinetic energy and vibrant atmospheric details. Editorial style photography became popular in the 50’s and remains unwaveringly iconic and timeless.
The Location
After reviewing Sylena and Hector’s Pinterest mood board, Downtown Houston at sunset was undeniably the most fitting location and time. We walked around to capture the city vibe and made noteworthy stops on Main Street, my favorite parking garage, and a walkway under The Star Building.
About The Couple
As fate would have it, Sylena and Hector paths crossed in High School when they were introduced through a mutual friend. It wasn’t until after college that their friendship would evolve into something more. Hector believes there is elegance in simplicity. So at their beloved Memorial Park, Hector got down one knee and asked “Will you marry me?”, and Sylena said “Yes!”.
As soon as they booked their photoshoot, Hector confessed that he has a bad case of scopophobia. Which is a fear of being stared at or the center of attention. He offered a few solutions to calm his fears including bringing two friends to the photoshoot. But I advised against it…
By looking through this gallery, one would never guess that Hector was so camera shy. Moreover, the majority of Ama By Aisha clients have little to no camera experience. I reassured him that we are experts in preparing, supporting, and giving couples guiding feedback all the way through. One of the advantages of doing an engagement shoot is for the couple to learn our process of photography and gain our trust. By the end of the shoot, our amateur couples feel like professional models! This experience generally leads to an easier flow on the wedding day and better results too!

I’m undoubtedly looking forward to capturing Sylena and Hector’s wedding being planned by the incredible (and most favorite wedding planner!) Harper Events.
